I Love Firefox 3 Yet I Hate Firefox 3
July 5, 2008 – 12:07 amI’ve been using Mozilla Firefox 3 since taking part in the Guinness record breaking attempt and now I sort of have a love and hate relationship with this browser. Below are some of my thoughts about this new version of Firefox.

I love Firefox 3 because…
- Being one of the participants who helped Mozilla Firefox to create a Guinness world record (official).
- Being able to print my name on a downloadable Firefox 3 certificate.

- Hated by many but I think I am in love with the “Awesome Bar“!
- One click “star” bookmarking gets to “unsorted bookmark” folder.
- Tags (at last!)
- The password manager does not pop-up!
- Check previous download link.
- Search for add-ons does not require a user to go to the extensions web page.
- The memory-eating-monster was banished (or at least lost some of its powers).
- Gotta love the robots easter egg! (type about:robots in address bar)
I hate it because…
- It crashes and crashes and crashes and crashes a few times a day. And yes, I do click on “Send Report” button.

- Some of my favorite extensions like Aardvark, Copy Links etc. are still not compatible with FF3.
That is all about it, based on my personal experience in the past few weeks. Based on what I’ve seen so far, I still in love Mozilla Firefox!
p/s please fix the crash bugs. Flock and Opera is catching up, fast!

Firefox 3 has it’s share of problems too. But still it’s much better than Firefox 2 I think.

Haven’t seen or experienced the crashes you have shown or anything less than completely stability (even on a low power Windows 2000 Eee PC 900). If this is common amongst Firefox users then clearly Firefox has done something wrong here. The extensions issue isn’t really Mozilla’s fault.
Flock and Opera are catching up fast? Really?

I agree with all the points. I also do like Firefox 3 more than FF2, but still hate it because of its problems.

why i hate Firefox 3 just because it creates mess when you write a postin Wordpress Editor .
I did downloaded Firefox 3 to vote for Firefox 3 on download day but

@BlogsDNA: I am thinking of rolling back too if the problem continues.
@DoesWhat: Yeah, check out the features offered by both of them.

I like firefox because it’s a good browser, I hate it because of all the fanboys posting tons of BS about it or keep spamming me

Good review. I’ve had some hangups too, but crashes are rare for me. But then, it has been so for me even on FF2, so perhaps it has got something to do with my usage and habits. And am I glad
As for extensions, they’ll take time to be fixed because many authors are working part-time on extensions occasionally only (meaning they don’t have the onus to update it quickly).

Syahid,
I have both FF2 and FF3 installed on my pc, and at first used FF2 most of the time. However with a few tweaks here and there, and the right add ons I use FF3 more and more.
It is still a bit buggy in places for example, the full screen mode doesn’t always work correctly etc, but it has never crashed on me.
I have even installed it at work on a server, and run it from there ok (albeit the portable version.)
Regards.

I love ff3 in some way, but not more than ff2 (except that memory eater monster and bookmark searching while typing in the address bar).
It crashes quite frequently, which ff2 never ever almost).
Also, my all file types are shattered. FF3 doesn’t start media player plugin, when I try to open any streaming video or even zshare videos. I am very sad, I couldn’t fix this thing, I tried to set my file types, same as FF2, but still it’s not opening any streaming videos or zshare videos. Can someone help me here, fixing this??

As an alternative to Aardvark ff extension, you can use its bookmarklet.

Yup! … I’m afraid that the awesome bar tries to be a little too clever for my liking, and I have no intention of tagging 4000+ bookmarks. In fact it’s not just the awesome bar that irks, the new bookmarks system is buggy as hell , try right clicking any bookmark folder in the sidebar, then choose “sort by name” …. it won’t work. Overall FF3 is trying too hard, we don’t need the added security features, it’s just more bloat, most users will have perfectly adequate security already installed. The last thing that needs to be mentioned is that Firefox 3 crashes on a regular basis, whereas I get absolutely no crashes using Firefox 2.

quote “The extensions issue isn’t really Mozilla’s fault.”
Actually, it’s 100% Mozilla’s fault, because they are the ones that said “screw you” to the developers and broke compatibility. If they had planned it correctly from the beginning, old extensions would still be compatible.
Mozilla is a huge embarrassment to the open source community.

I’m running FF2 / FF3 side by side …. a personal opinion
1. FF2 is more stable, FF3 still buggy even after v3.0.1, I’ve had a few crashes in the first weeks of using FF3, none in FF2.
2. Added security features in FF3 = unnecessary bloatware, most people already have anti-virus anti-phishing protection and according to MozillaZine forums it’s the cause of much crashing, their advice is to turn off the “suspect sites” protection in FF3.
3. Awesomebar, I can take it or leave it, mostly I leave it. Use the “Oldbar” extension + a couple of about:config hacks to stop the awesome bar searching & cacheing your browser bookmarks & history.
4. FF3’s new bookmarking system is terrible, it’s pants. The Unsorted bookmarks folder needs to be brought to the top of the folder tree, the bookmarks dialogue window is locked in one position beneath the star button, it should be free-floating as in FF2, but very worst of all is FF3’s “Sort by Name” function. If you open your bookmarks sidebar and right-click on any folder, then choose the sort by name option … nothing happens. To sort your bookmark folders by name in FF3 you have to go to bookmarks menu, open bookmarks library, select the bookmark icon in the left-hand panel, right-click it and choose sort by name, then after much disc thrashing and about 15 secs later it finishes sorting your bookmarks. I do the same thing in FF2 with the same amount of bookmark folders in approx 1 second!
5. Apart from that what’s not to like … there’s still no competion to Firefox in the Browser market, and for those who cry “Opera” or “Safari”, I have just one reply … “Extensions” !

“Firefox has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.” This happened almost every session on my Windows 2000 system. Most of the time it couldn’t even complete the crash dump. I had to revert to FF2 and install Opera as an alternate browser. Somebody at Mozilla needs to go back to the drawing board, right now!

I closed Firefox 3 immediately when I noticed it is still horribly ugly and too many menus and options and bars and tools and dorky buttons all over the place that I don’t want to have to customize and work out.
Just give me an address bar, and a back/forward button, please. Alas, Chrome has been released and it is exactly what I need and want.
