How to Enable Real Time Virus Scanning for ClamAV
May 10, 2008 – 12:46 pmClam Antivirus or ClamAV is an open source, free and fast antivirus program that you can use to scan and delete viruses from your computer. It works on various operating systems platform such as Windows and Linux. However, ClamAV has one big flaw - it still does not have a real time scanning engine. In this post, I will show you on how to enable real time scanning virus support for Clam Antivirus, using Spyware Terminator - a real time, spyware removing tool. This way, you can provide an additional layer of protection from viruses and spywares inside your computer.
You don’t have to install ClamAV first. The first thing that you need to do is to download Spyware Terminator here and install it in your computer.
Steps to Enable Real Time Scanning for ClamAV with Spyware Terminator
Install Spyware Terminator
1- Launch Spyware Terminator.
2- Select “Settings” on top of the Spyware Terminator menu. Next, select Clam Antivirus on the sidebar menu. Press “Yes” when asked to integrate WinClamAVShield into Spyware Terminator. Click Next to proceed with ClamAV installation.
3- Accept the license agreement (duh!). Click Next again and wait for the ClamAV installation process to finish. Press Close once it is done. You will be taken back to the Clam Antivirus settings menu.
4- On the “Integration” screen, select “Use WinClamAVShield for integration” and “Integrate ClamAV in Realtime Shield“. Don’t forget to “Save Changes“.
Enable Spyware Terminator + Clam Antivirus Real Time Protection
5- Select “Real Time Protection” on top of Spyware Terminator menu. Select “Use Real Time Protection” and “Host Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS)” to enable active spyware and virus scanning.
6- On the same screen, select “File Access Shield” on the ClamAV Guard section. “Save Changes” again.
7- Next, select ClamAV Guard from the sidebar menu. Make sure the permission level is set to “Stop Threats Access Only” to minimize user interaction.
8- Shutdown and restart Spyware Terminator to activate real time scanning of viruses. Make sure that you can see that it is running from Spyware Terminator’s System Summary screen.
Test ClamAV Real Time Virus Scanning with EICAR
9- EICAR is a virus test file that is harmless but useful to test if your antivirus works or not. Try to download EICAR from here. If everything works fine, you will notice that Spyware Terminator + ClamAV will block your download attempt successfully.
There you go, real time spyware and virus scanning galore, F.O.C courtesy of Spyware Terminator and ClamAV. Additionally, you can do a manual virus scan from within Spyware Terminator too. However, I recommend that you install this software only as an extra protection against viruses and do keep your full blown antivirus installed and running. Remember that security will always have some holes, sometime, somewhere.
