Mobysaurus - Free, Desktop Based Thesaurus
May 7, 2008 – 3:55 pmFirst things first. A dictionary is used to search for definitions / meaning of words. On the other hand, a thesaurus is used to find words that mean the same or synonyms. For example, if you search for “work” in a dictionary, the results will be like “an activity directed toward making or doing something” but in a thesaurus, a search for “work” will return words like “act“, “job” and others. I hope you are clear on that. Having said that, you can now have your own, free desktop thesaurus called Mobysaurus.

If you don’t have an idea on why you need a thesaurus, go sue your English teacher (lol!). A thesaurus can help to broaden your vocabulary, help you to use the most appropriate words in a sentence, prevent over using of words, thus makes you look smarter than ever. With Mobysaurus sitting on your desktop, you don’t have to google for words inside your browser or flipping through your dusty thesaurus to look for the best words to use. All you need to do it to trigger Mobysaurus from the system tray and enter a word search. As simple as that.

Reasons why Mobysaurus is a cool dinosaur desktop thesaurus:
- Comes with over 2.5 million synonyms and 30000 headwords.
- Intuitive and easy to use tabbed interface.
- Word suggestions - words will start appearing on the interface as-you-type (lol at paper based thesaurus!)
- Wildcard support - good for those that failed on the first round of any spelling bee competition.
- Highlight a word from any application, press the Mobysaurus hotkey and hey, instant synonyms!
- Headword suggestion and full text search - search for “work” will return phrases like “work of art“, “out of work“, “work for” so you can learn and choose the best phrases to use.
- Find synonymous headwords in structural view.
- Works wonderfully well with WordWeb desktop dictionary.
- Histories and Favorites tab saved a record of words that you have searched for previously.

- Can’t find the best words from Mobysaurus? No worries! There is an option to look up for synonyms online from within the interface, by taking advantages of popular services such as WordZilla, Merriam Webster Online, Google, etc.

You can also use the online version of Mobysaurus here, if you prefer not to download anything as cool as this (I wonder why?). Get word-smart and download Mobysaurus desktop thesaurus today!

Do you think it’s better than just using Microsoft Word and getting synonyms from there?
By Aseem Kishore on May 7, 2008
@Haris: Glad you like it!
@Aseem: Microsoft thesaurus is good but this one offers more words with excellent headwords support. The way it suggest phrases (optional) is cool enough for me.
