How to Spell Check from Any Windows Application

March 18, 2008 – 3:32 pm

Unlike Microsoft Word, some of the text editors out there does not include a spell checking function. Copying and pasting text from an application to another for the sake of correcting some spelling mistakes is not really that practical. To spell check words or phrases from any Windows application, you need TinySpell.

TinySpell is a free program that allows you to spell check words on-the-fly from any Windows application. Usage is very simple - just run TinySpell on the system tray and you can continue with your work. If you mistakenly type a word, TinySpell will beep to alert you of a spelling mistake that have occurred. To correct that word, press the Ctrl + ; hotkey combo and TinySpell will pop out a context menu with a list of suggested words replacement. Select the appropriate word and you are done!

TinySpell Features

  • Spell check on-the-fly from virtually ANY Windows application, need I say more?
  • Check spelling of words that are copied to the clipboard.
  • Choose a list of Applications to enable/disable TinySpell - so there is no continuous, worrying beep sounds if you type ROTFL or LOL while you are on Digsby instant messaging sessions.
  • Can be quickly turned on and off with hotkeys.

  • Simplistic way to choose a replacement word - via a hotkey enabled context menu.

  • Use little system resources.
  • Comes with 110,000 words from the American-English dictionary.
  • Allows you to add your own word to TinySpell dictionary.
  • You can change the default beeping sound based on your preferences.

If you are going to use TinySpell, I suggest that you learn the shortcut keys (configurable) to enable and disable the program at will. This way, you don’t have to deal with annoying beeping sounds while you are typing texts in non-English language or composing your HTML code. Other than that, TinySpell offers good spell checking function for any Windows program that you can think of.
