14 Terrific Reasons to Choose FeedDemon as Your RSS Reader

March 12, 2008 – 8:41 pm

One of the ways to scan and read many articles from different websites with a single interface is to use a RSS reader. I have subscribed to a lot of RSS feeds, thus I need an excellent RSS reader to make sure that I can quickly find the article that will be most beneficial to me. I am an avid fan of Google Reader but I’ve heard many people said good things about FeedDemon - an offline, freeware RSS reader. Therefore, I’ve decided to give it a try.

After using FeedDemon for a few days, I must say that it does an excellent job in helping me to read and organize my RSS feeds! There are many FeedDemon reviews out there, so I am not going to write another one. Alternatively, I will list down 14 reasons, IMHO, on why you should seriously consider FeedDemon as your desktop RSS Reader:

1- Newspaper format - FeedDemon displays all your feed items in pages so you don’t have to exclusively click on a particular feed over and over again. The excellent “Next” button will move you to next page (it’s like flipping a newspaper page) and mark all the items from the previous page as read. What a time saver!

2- One page subscription summary - From the root of the FeedDemon subscription folder, you can instantly identify which feeds that contain unread items, which feeds you read the most and which feeds that you normally ignore (time to unsubscribe perhaps?)

3- Watch - Create a “watch” to scan and display feed items with specific keywords based on of your subscribed feeds. Useful for bloggers who need quick, up-to-date information for specific keywords.

4- Dinosaurs + Cleanup Wizard - Dinosaurs shows you feeds that are not updated since (selectable) 10, 30, 60 or 120 days. Cleanup Wizard allows you define items that you want to clean by date, items or item types. Two separate tools for a quick, obsolete feed cleanup.

5- Panic Button - Feeling overwhelmed with too much feed items to read? Hit the magnificent Panic Button for instant gratification.

6- Popular Topics - If you don’t have the time to read all of your feed items, head up to this section to read popular feed items from your feed subscription and other people’s subscription.

7- Clippings - In Google Reader, this is called “Starred Items“. Clippings store all your bookmarked items in a central location so you can refer to it later. You can dump all your favorite items in the default “My Clippings” or create additional clippings folder to organize your items. Additionally, you can create your own RSS feed based on your clippings to be shared with others!

8- Keyword Search Feeds - Use this tool to find RSS feeds of blogs from the same niche, blogs of the same interest and more. Just enter a keyword or phrase e.g. “make money online“, “tech blog“, “recipes” to find blogs that produce that kind of content.

9- Internal, tabbed web browser - Some of the blogs out there does not provide full RSS feeds. No problem! Click on any link to open the page in another tab inside FeedDemon. There is no need to open a separate, external web browser window to view the full post.

10- Prefetching - With this, you can download feed contents, links and images. The number of feed items to download is selectable. Very useful if you want to work offline or have a limited internet connection.

11- FeedStation - This feature allows you to download multimedia files e.g. podcasts from a feed and autocopy it to your iPod or other portable media player.

12- NewsGator Online synchronization - Imagine NewsGator as an online version of FeedDemon and you can sync folder and folder items between both of them with ease. This way, you can effortlessly access your current folder and feed items from multiple computers!

Previously, people are willing to pay to use FeedDemon because it offers comprehensive, value for money features. Now that the developers have made it free, I don’t think that you can afford missing to try it, at least once! Download FeedDemon freeware RSS reader today!

  7. One thing I don’t like about feedreader is that the folders don’t follow when you migrate with OPML files. I’m sticking with my NewsFire :-)

  8. @hongkiat: Thanks for the information HK! Newsfire looks cool. Pity that I don’t have a Mac to try that.

  9. Syahid,
I swear by Netvibes, however, after your article would consider FeedDemon if it was a Web 2.0 or online app. It would mean I have to download it to every pc, and I wouldn’t be able to use it at work.
    Regards and thanks.

  10. jsanderz; their desktop apps sync with their free online reader (full app suite listed @ http://www.newsgator.com/Individuals/ ) so you can use the desktop at home and the online version at work.

I use NetNewsWire at home, FeedDemon at work, GO! on my blackberry, and the online version when I’m using someone else’s PC.
