Quickly Bookmark a Link with Instapaper

February 6, 2008 – 9:53 pm

A normal reaction when an Internet user encounter a long, interesting article is to bookmark it for later reading. The only problem is that we tend to forget about it, instead of reading it later. Instapaper aims to solve this problem by providing a quick way to bookmark a link on the web, and complement it with an intuitive interface that was designed to facilitate future reading.

How to Use Instapaper

First, you need to register before you can use Instapaper. You don’t really need to use an email address to use it, anything that you can remember will do. Next, drag and drop the Read Later” bookmarklet to the Firefox toolbar. The next time you see an article and want to save it for the future, just click on the “Read Later” bookmarklet. Done. Even better, highlight a meaningful text inside the article before you click on the bookmarklet. This way, Instapaper will insert a description for the bookmark, so that you don’t forget the reason why you are bookmarking it.

The next time you feel like reading, login to Instapaper and you can start reading your article by clicking on any link. Read items will be moved to the “Recently Read” section at the bottom of Instapaper. Other possible actions include deleting a bookmark, editing a bookmark’s description and skipping a bookmark (move to “Recently Skipped” section).

Instapaper is good for…

  • Internet skimming / information search - read only the short post and save the long post for later.
  • Information sharing - RSS subscription support is available for each Instapaper account. The fact that it does not require a password makes it even easier to share links among friends.
  • Apple iPhone users - the designer make sure that Instapaper works nicely inside it.
  • Reading on the move - the lightweight, fast loading interface is suitable for portable device access.

IMO, the best part of Instapaper is its simple and intuitive interface. You can start using Instapaper in less than 3 minutes, without having to fill in a long registration form. Its newspaper like interface makes it easier on the eyes too! A definitely must try for both casual and heavy Internet users looking for the quickest way to bookmark a link for late night reading.

  6. @zamz: No. Delicious is used for serious social bookmarking. This one makes it easy for you to mark and read a long article later. Consider this as a temporary bookmarking tool.
