Use Zero Assumption Disk Space Analyzer to Scan Big Files
January 24, 2008 – 5:30 pmHard disk size is getting bigger and bigger nowadays. When I first started using a computer in 1995, a hard disk size is calculated in Megabytes (MB) but today, I’ve seen hard disks in Terabytes (TB)! A mere thumb drive can also reaches Gigabytes (GB) these days. Nevertheless, with the amount of contents that can be downloaded from the Internet, one can never have enough of hard disk spaces.
There is this freeware called “Zero Assumption Disk Space Visualizer” (don’t laugh!) that can help you to check out which big files or directories that consumes your hard disk spaces. Based on the results, you can delete unnecessary / obsolete files and save yourselves some money to buy other things instead of bigger hard disks that you know will never be enough for you.

Features of Disk Space Analyzer
-
Able to scan and visualize hard disks or directories.
- Refresh function for quick recalculation of previously scanned disks.
- Zoom in – useful to check files and folders inside a particular folder.
- Delete to recycle bin – right click on an item to send it to the Windows Recycle bin.
- Delete forever – or set this on Drive -> Preferences to send obsolete files to oblivion.
- Directory / object details – click on an item to check its Name, Size, Size on disk and slack percentage (wasted disk space)
Example Usage of Zero Assumption Disk Space Analyzer
1- Download Zero Assumption Disk Space Analyzer and install it as any normal Windows programs.
2- Double click the icon on the desktop to launch it.
3- From the menu bar click “Drive“. Select either “Open drive” to scan a disk drive or “Open folder” to scan a directory. In this example, I choose to scan my C: drive.
4- The scanning process will start. Once it is finished, you can see a visual representation of your C: drive. A big rectangle means a directory that occupies big spaces inside your hard disk and vice versa. Click on a big rectangle and observe its file size on the “Object details” section below.

5- (optional) You can also double click on a particular rectangle to dig deeper inside it. The visualizer will show you the updated version of that particular folder.

6- (optional) If you want to delete a file, right click on its rectangle and click Delete.
Zero Assumption Disk Space Analyzer is a simple application that does just what its name says – to analyze and provide a useful visual representation of your hard disk. I love the part where I can delete my files from within its interface. My only problem is that sometimes it took quite some time to scan a huge partition with huge amount of folders and files. Other that that, this one is one fine freeware. Try it today!

One Response to “Use Zero Assumption Disk Space Analyzer to Scan Big Files”
This is good for visual representation of the file system.A different approach to the same thing is TreeSize (lite version is free). It will show your files and folders in tree like view with files and folders containing most space at the top. This setup is useful if you want to quickly hunt down the files and folders that are taking the most space and delete some of them.
