Change and Play Songs with The Same Volume Level, MediaMonkey Style
November 26, 2007 – 12:14 amHave you ever been in a situation when you have to adjust and keep re-adjusting your PC music player volume knob because some music files are a little bit louder than the others? This is because of different volume levels of music files, caused by different methods / tools used to turn the music into digital format.
In this post, I will explain on how to change your digital music files volume level with MediaMonkey, so that you can play songs at the same volume level, with any desktop music player that you wish.

First Choice: The Easy and Safe Way
The easiest way to listen songs with the same music level is to utilize MediaMonkey’s “Level Playback Volume” feature. On the menu bar, click “Play” and then, click “Level Playback Volume“. This way, MediaMonkey will collect related information on your music files and based on the statistics, it play all the songs with the same volume levels.

Advantages: Quickest way to listen songs with the same volume level, albeit changes are temporary.
Disadvantages: This feature will work within MediaMonkey built in media player only. You can’t have the same music levels with your favorite media player e.g WinAmp, QCD Player.
Second Choice: The Permanent Way
The other way is to change the volume levels of your music files permanently. This process is irreversible so you have been warned!
Here are the steps to change your music volume levels permanently:
1- Open MediaMonkey. If you don’t have it, download MediaMonkey here.
2- Open up the folder / drive containing the music files.

3- Check out the “Leveling” column columns on your music files list. The bigger the difference between each song numbers (+dB), the bigger the difference will be in term of loudness of the songs. This is what we are going to change.

If you can’t see these information within MediaMonkey, select all the songs in the folder, click “Tools –> Analyze Volume” on the menu bar and wait for a few minutes.
4- To set the same volume level for all of the songs, select all the music files and click “Tools –> Level Track Volume” on the menu bar.

5- A warning will pop up saying that changes to the music files are irreversible. Click “YES” to proceed.

6- Wait for the changes to finish by monitoring the status bar at the bottom of MediaMonkey’s interface. Volume leveling are now completed.

Advantages: Changes to the music files are permanent so that you can play the songs with your favorite desktop music player. You can experience the same effects with your portable music player too!
Disadvantages: Because of volume leveling, avid / picky music listeners will notice noticeable quality degradation on some music files.
My Suggestion: Backup your music files and do this method folder by folder so that you don’t screw up, big time.
Bonus Tip:
You can always achieve the second way by using a freeware called MP3Gain!
That’s it. It is your choice right now to choose the best method that works for you. The end result of both ways are the same, music with the same playback volume - thus letting you enjoy your music a little bit more!
