    My choice is iTunes!

By Bat on Oct 27, 2007

  6. @ Bat : yeah, WinAmp consumes quite a lot of RAM. i recommend you to try out Quintessential / Billy.
@ Shankar : yeah, one of the coolest player that i’ve seen. very minimalist indeed.

  9. Nice list of player there.
Hmmm…one notable player missing from the list though, VLC.
    It play almost every format.
Although one minor drawback, still have problem displaying Chinese song title.

  10. @kahfei: yeah, it is a very good all rounded player. i too have it installed in my machine but in this post, i focused more on mp3 audio players only. and you should try GOM player too – another nice multi format player.

  11. Hi,
i think Jet Audio can also be the best alternative to Win Amp and Windows media player too. I am using that from last 6 – 7 yrs. I’m loving it.

  12. @ssdpi: Yeah, JetAudio is quite nice too. I hope they make the full version free too! :D

  16. you should try cocaine player 2.0 it’s the best by far it enables you to get music to sound like it does when you are on cocaine.

By Raphael on May 20, 2008

  17. I’ve been searching for a replacement for Musicmatch Jukebox, and I have come to the conclusion that every other player out there sucks hot balls. Why those Yahoo bastards bought it and allowed it to die I will never know, but fuck them in the ass. None of the other players really even do anything, except allow you to play songs one at a time. I don’t see why people aren’t clamoring to be the next Musicmatch. I guess nobody cares anymore, now that you can plug your iCrap into everything, including the dog and a watermelon. Go to hell, iTunes.

  18. To Anaughtybear – I couldn’t agree with you more! Have you found anything? Everything else I find to be unuseable. This sucks.

  28. I find that Billy is the one for me; despite the lack of skins and updates, I find the ability to give every function a shortcut to be really useful. It’s fast and doesn’t take as much memory as WinAmp.

By Melancholych on Oct 7, 2008

  29. I think AIMP2 is the best alternatives to winamp

    By flip9 on Dec 25, 2008

  30. Well… I tried 5, 6, 7 and 8 but I still use WinAmp – maybe just an old habit. Anyway, switch it to the Classic interface and you will be astonished how fast it will perform. The modern interface is the bloaty thing in the equation. See for yourself. :P

By Morpheus on Jul 27, 2009

  34. Winamp is great. Why would itunes even be listed as an option? This list should be 10 alternatives to iTunes.

  35. i just downloaded songbird, im a sucker for looks

By ishmael on Feb 16, 2010

  36. Xion Media Player is a fairly new and quickly rising media player that is fully skinnable through PSD’s.

It’s fairly lightweight and has great sound.

As for winamp, it’s good if you don’t care how much RAM it takes up. I use it alongside tons of other heavier apps and never have a problem. On my old machine it skipped alot.

  37. Love the sonique.thnx a lot

By shoaib hussain on Mar 1, 2010

  38. One Player – everything possible – audio, video, VCD, DVD, all formats – VLC Media player

Now available with many cool skins also.

By partha on May 8, 2010

  39. Thanks for the alternatives. WinAmp is definitely the llamas ars alright. Use WinAmp and you spend hours searching for what YOU did wrong to make it crash once again. Lil too much white powder in the developers room I think – yes Bill that means you. Since the 1′st release its always been a waste of time – why do I bother. Thanks again for the list.

  40. I am looking for a media player (music only) with the following attributes:

    1. Playlist with editable columns
    2. MUST be able to either very large playlists without going into hysterics after 15-20 minutes,
or to remove songs from the playlist that have been played and add songs that have not been played, in order to keep the playlist to a reasonable size.
    3. Preferably with a graphic equalizer.

Skins are not essential, forget Winamp and WMP.

  41. I am looking for a media player with the following attributes. MUST have playlist with selectable column headers, and MUST be able to handle very large playlists, OR to remove songs that have been played, and replace them to keep the playlist to a reasonable size. Forget Winamp and WMP. Can anybody help me?

By Bob Harris on Jul 8, 2010

  42. Winamp is crap, just like most MP3 players. If you want real audio quality try using VLC for your mp3 playback. It too supports .cue playing natively.
Also, you should always use the equalizer of your soundcard software, NEVER the player’s.
If you don’t believe me about audio quality, do your own tests with a nice quality mp3 (above 192KBps) and a good set of headphones (like AKG or SENNHEISER)

  45. Aimp is the best music player. I suggest to try it.

By mbd on Sep 3, 2010

  46. what do you mean exactly with “better sound quality than WinAmp” in QCD? The only difference is that is powered by GraceNote. The sound is pretty much the same to me…

  47. i like itunes most

  48. songbird is just awesome, cant believe i havent heard of it before. thanks

By Shah on Feb 28, 2011

  49. Just tried songbird, nice interface but horrible sound quality! What goes on there?

By tommy on Jul 25, 2011

  50. Might want to reconsider having MediaMonkey on this list — it couldn’t seem to burn a CD w/out including skips and pops. Never had that on any program before (or any since).

Also, the interface is awful IMO.

By Phlegmbot on Aug 16, 2011

  51. Quintessential will not play FLAC files. Plug-in does not install. And who doesn’t have FLAC files. Soyanara Q.

By rich on Nov 21, 2011

  52. The best player is Jaangle. It has the best organizer and sound quality. Believe me cause i’ve tried every single of those media player here and on other websites. Go and try it.

By TZMDragger on Feb 11, 2012

  53. I need a player like winamp that has a tiny little player with all the info visible. (classic player). Winamp has forever stopped making sound within a month of loading it. It looses its connection with the sound card. Had it for as long as its been around and has always happened. You have to reload it to get it back. I would leave it completely but all the other programs are big stupid layouts. All I want it to play a folder (I have everything arranged the way I want it) and be a small footprint on my desktop. (classic style winamp). Any other ones fit this requirement?
