Greasemonkey Script: Search Google Reader RSS Feeds

September 5, 2007 – 9:03 pm

Google Reader is a fantastic online rss reader but it lacks a search function. Imagine having thousands of rss feeds but you can’t find a specific keyword from it, frustrating yes? Thanks to the wonders of Firefox’s Greasemonkey add-ons, a guy called Casell had created a script that enables you to search within Google Reader.

Obviously, the Greasemonkey script is called Google Reader Search. Installation is very easy, follow this instructions to install Greasemonkey and click “Install Script” from the Google Reader Search script download page. Launch Google Reader and you can find the search field on top left of the screen.

How To Use Google Reader Search

1- Insert your search keywords on the first field. Click “Go” if you don’t want to tweak anything.

2- The second combo box is “result search order”. Select either to sort your search results by the newest, oldest or just plain automatic.

3- Enter the number of entries to search before the plugin stopped searching in the third search field. Enter a big number to broaden your search scope.

4- Just leave the fourth field as it is. Honestly, I don’t really know how the cache timeout works. Do you?

Search results will be displayed in a blue pop up screen but I believe the interface can further be improved. Google Reader Search is not really perfect but it is worth having than nothing right? Sometimes it works, yet sometimes it doesn’t return any good results.

Why don’t you try it today and share your experiences here?
